Lichen (??)

This is growing in little patches on the slope of my backyard.
My husband believe it's some sort of Lichen...me...I do not know and cannot find anything similar on the net.
But I just love the softness and tiny details you can see when the sun hits it just right.
Anyone have any ideas?
